What is a COSHH Assessment?
COSHH stands for the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002. A COSHH assessment evaluates the risks from hazardous substances in the workplace, including chemicals, dusts (wood dust, silica, cement), biological agents (Leptospirosis, Legionella), and fumes (welding, soldering). Every UK employer who uses or produces hazardous substances must carry out COSHH assessments. The assessment must identify the substance, the exposure route, the people at risk, and the control measures to reduce exposure to an acceptable level. COSHH assessments are often written alongside RAMS documents to form a complete safety pack.

What must a COSHH assessment include?
Under the COSHH Regulations 2002, a suitable and sufficient assessment must identify the hazardous substances present, the people who may be exposed, the nature and degree of exposure, the control measures in place, any monitoring and health surveillance needed, and the emergency procedures. It must be reviewed regularly and whenever there is a significant change.
